Barcelona survived a Getafe fightback to win an entertaining La Liga clash 2-1 at the Camp Nou on Saturday.
The visitors started strongly and had the ball in the back of the net on 25 minutes, only to see Allan Nyom's effort ruled out by VAR for a foul on Samuel Umtiti in the buildup.
Barcelona lost left-back Jordi Alba to injury in the first half but sprang into life with two goals in six minutes to take control of the match before half-time.
Lionel Messi sent Antoine Griezmann through on goal to beat goalkeeper David Soria for the opener before Sergi Roberto finished a well-worked team move with a low strike.
Getafe pulled one back in the second half through substitute Angel Rodriguez to set up a tense finish, but Barcelona managed to hold on to secure all three points.
Getafe pressed Barcelona from kick-off and caused the hosts plenty of problems early on. Jorge Molina was a handful in attack, while Barcelona loanee Marc Cucurella flashed a shot just wide of the post.
The visitors thought they had gone ahead when Nyon netted a rebound after goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had parried a header from Molina. However, a VAR check showed the midfielder had fouled Umtiti before scoring, and the goal was disallowed.
Football writer Dermot Corrigan felt it was the right decision:
A difficult start from Barcelona then got even worse when Alba was forced off with an injury. The left-back limped off the pitch after suffering an adductor problem and was replaced by Junior Firpo.
Messi had shown a few glimmers of his brilliance in the first half but came up with yet another decisive moment to help Barca take the lead. The captain produced a superb one-touch assist to send Griezmann through on goal to lift the ball past Soria with the outside of his boot.
The goal was Griezmann's first in La Liga under new manager Quique Setien, while Messi's assist was his sixth from his last three Barcelona games.
A second goal arrived in some style before the break. A flowing move involving Messi, Griezmann and Arthur culminated in Junior crossing for an unmarked Roberto to fire home from inside the area:
Getafe struggled to trouble Barcelona at the start of the second half, prompting manager Jose Bordalas to send on attacking reinforcements in the shape of Angel Rodriguez, recently linked with a move to the Camp Nou, and Chelsea loanee Kenedy.
Angel was the man to get Getafe back into the game just after the hour with his 10th of the season. The forward steered home a brilliant volley from Jaime Mata's cross to halve the deficit.
The Getafe substitute almost scored a second minutes later. Ter Stegen blocked Angel's header on the line and then clawed the ball to safety before Mata could smash home the rebound (as shown by La Liga):
Barcelona had chances to score a third but saw Griezmann blaze a good effort over the bar and Messi curl a shot fractionally past the top corner.
The hosts did enough to hold on to the win against an impressive Getafe to move back level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the table ahead of Los Blancos' clash with Celta Vigo on Sunday.
What's Next?
Barcelona return to action on Saturday against Eibar in La Liga at the Camp Nou. Getafe's next fixture is on Thursday against Ajax in the UEFA Europa League.
